Who qualifies for a scholarship?
Students in grades 8 - 12 traveling on a community trip to Israel for the first time.
Are there residency criteria?
Yes. Children whose permanent residence is in the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation area of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and North), Marin and Sonoma Counties are welcome to apply.
When is the application deadline?
For Let's Go Israel, on-line applications must be submitted by April 1, 2010. For all other programs, applications must be submitted twelve weeks prior to trip departure.
How do you decide who gets a scholarship?
The lay volunteer First Time Experience in Israel Scholarship Committee of the Jewish Community Federation makes the final decision based on pre-established selection criteria.
If I have a Gift of Israel Savings Plan, how do I request the release of funds for my child's first time experience in Israel?
The Gift of Israel website has program information and all on-line forms needed to sign up or release your savings. Questions should be addressed to dawnd@sfjcf.org if you wish to bring your account current.
When will I know if I received a scholarship?
You will be notified by mail by May 15, 2010 for non-summer programs; four weeks prior to departure
What makes the application complete?
- Completed BJE on-line application plus addendums
- A signed copy of the 2009 federal tax return with all schedules & W2's exactly as filed with the IRS.
- If you do not file a tax return, submit all official documents from: Cal works, Food stamps, Social security, Workman's comp, VA benefits, loans and other income for 2009.

Long-term return study or service in Israel
Unfortunately, the BJE does not have any current scholarships for young adults over the age of 18 and/or out of high school. Please contact the Israel Center, MASA or the Haas/Koshland Award Committee at the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, or visit www.studyinisrael.org for more information.
