The Jewish Community Federation College Scholarship Program is administered by the Bureau of Jewish Education. Everyone must complete an on-line Family application and a program application which has two parts:
- Part 1: College Pre-Acceptance gathers information about the student's current school enrollment and their performance.
- Part 2: College Post-Acceptance gathers information about where the student will attend college in 2010-2011 and their financial aid offer.
In addition, 10 documents must be submitted by mail to the BJE

April 30, 2010 Applications are reviewed on a first-come first-served basis. We welcome early submissions! Sorry - an incomplete application will not be processed and deadlines can not be extended beyond the published due date.

Typed Cover Letter with:
your first and last name, address (permanent home/not college address), cell phone, email and, your parent's first and last name
NOTE: If you are reapplying to the BJE, also include your BJE ID# and the name of your previous year college funder.
- Two academic recommendations (on letterhead) from where you are currently enrolled from a teacher/professor or counselor. Ask them to discuss your character as well as academic achievements.

- Cumulative transcripts - through academic college semester/quarter Fall 2009 or the last four years of high school.
- A 1000 word essay. The funder reads this document! Elucidate what drives you to achieve: in academics, community or Jewish service, and/or career goal (i.e. how the past shaped the person you are today). NOTE: Reapplying students: a new essay is required by your funder based on your current academic year perspective, achievements, Jewish participation on campus and career goals.

- Statement of Economic Circumstances: from either you or your parent. Be specific: if a parent is out of work, let us know the % drop in income for 2010. If a family member has major medical health issues, note its effect on disposable income. If you want to go to a private college and you can't do so without assistance, note this etc. etc.
- Activity Resume: lists awards, outside activities, and Jewish participation (list separately) *Star or highlight what you are most proud of in your list!
- A copy of the SAR report (Student Aid Report) which is returned to you after you submit your initial Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It must include what the Federal government has determined are the parent(s) and student need i.e. EFC#.
- Federal 2009 tax returns only. Includes schedules A-E. From Both your parents and student - if you file.
- College Acceptance letter from where you will be attending college (NOTE not necessary for re-applicants unless they transfer colleges).
- Financial aid award letter from the college listing all grants, loans and outside awards you received.

Do I need to be a full-time student to apply?
Yes. Scholarships are for full-time students only who are enrolled in 12 plus units per quarter/semester.
Is there an age limit for applicants?
Yes. Undergraduate students must be under the age of 24 and graduate students must be under the age of 30, as of January 1st of the application year.
What are my chances of getting a scholarship?
50% of applicants received scholarships last year.
Please Note: our program is geared primarily to assist undergraduate students.
How many funds can I apply to and how many awards can I receive?
You may apply to more than one fund if you qualify, and may receive more than one scholarship award. You optimize your chances of receiving a scholarship by applying to multiple funds.
Is this a one-time only scholarship?
No. You are welcome to reapply each year.
How do you decide who receives a scholarship?
The lay volunteer College Scholarship Committee of the Jewish Community Federation makes the final decision based on pre-established selection criteria.
When will I know whether I received a scholarship?
We will notify you by mail at the end of the summer.

The Nathan Jay Friedman College Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduate students who are accepted to or are attending an accredited undergraduate college or university program.
Qualifications: Strong academic record and financial need.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Annual Grant: 1 scholarship of $5,000 or more.
The Elaine and Barry Gilbert College Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish high school seniors who will attend a University of California campus. Preference given to San Francisco's Lowell or Washington High School students.
Qualifications: Financial need, 3.5 GPA or better, and demonstrated Jewish involvement.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Annual Grants: 1-3 new scholarship per academic year of $3,000 - $5,000. Re-applicants from prior years will be funded if they meet the criteria.
The Stephanie G. Hoffman Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduate or graduate student accepted or attending an accredited college/university program.
Qualifications: Major in Library Science, English Literature, or related field, with the intention of working with underserved children to excite them through reading to pursue higher education.
Residency requirements:
Undergraduate: Student's parents must be permanent residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Graduate: Applicant must be a permanent resident of the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Annual Grant: 1-2 scholarship of $2,000 - $5,000.
Kanbar Charitable Trust
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduate students accepted or attending an accredited undergraduate college/university program.
Qualifications: Must demonstrate active participation in Jewish community life, strong academic record, and financial need.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Please Note: will consider Jewish Eastern European émigré who will attend UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis or local Cal State Universities, whose parents are permanent residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.
Annual Grants: Multiple new scholarships will be considered.
Jack and Elisa Klein Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduates and, on occasion, graduate students accepted or attending a four-year accredited college or university.
Qualifications: Financial need, strong academic record, and Jewish community involvement.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Please Note: on occasion, will consider exceptional Jewish students whose parents permanent address is outside the above-stated area.
Annual Grants: 8 to 10 scholarships: $3,000-$5,000 each.
Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: High school seniors.
Qualifications: Strong academic record, leadership potential, and financial need.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Annual Grants: Multiple new scholarships will be considered.
The Gail Karp Orgell Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Female undergraduate students, attending community college or a four-year university program.
Qualifications: This is a merit-based scholarship, based equally on three factors: academic excellence, achievements in leadership, and involvement in athletics. NOTE: A 1500 word essay and three recommendations addressing the three areas above are required to apply to this funder.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of San Francisco, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), Marin, and Sonoma Counties.
Annual Grants: 1-2 scholarships: $2,000-$4,000 each.
The Purple Lady / Barbara J. Meislin Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a professional music or dance career.
Qualifications: Musical potential and financial need.
Residency requirements: United States and Israeli citizens are welcome to apply.
Annual Grant: 1-3 scholarships of $1,500 - $2,500.
Sarlo Émigré Youth Fund
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate foreign-born students at accredited institutions of higher learning and/or the arts
Qualifications: Academic and/or artistic excellence and financial need.
Residency requirements: None.
Annual Grants: 6 or more scholarships: $1,000 - $10,000 each.
The S.F. Humanities, Inc: Leo Hills Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Jewish undergraduate students accepted into or attending an accredited college/university program or art/music institution.
Qualifications: Student must have proven track record of excellence in area of fine arts. Prefer high school senior graduating from Jewish Community High School of the Bay, Kehillah Jewish High School, or Lisa Kampner Hebrew Academy or in a dedicated public school arts' program.
Residency requirements: Student's parents must be permanent residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Annual Grants: 1-2 scholarship of $500 - $1,000.
The Ronald P. Wilmot Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students at accredited institutions of higher learning and/or the arts, who are children of gay and/or lesbian parent(s).
Qualifications: Academic and/or artistic excellence and financial need.
Residency requirements:
Undergraduate: Student's parents must be permanent residents of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), San Francisco, Solano, and Sonoma Counties.
Graduate: Applicant must be a permanent resident of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, the Peninsula (Sunnyvale and north), San Francisco, Solano, and Sonoma Counties.
Annual Grants: 4 to 6 scholarships: $3,000 - $5,000 each.
